St. X Runs the Table To Reign as the Best in Ohio Division I

St. Xavier put on a clinic in the Ohio Division I high school football championship game against Mentor (13-2).

St. X (15-0) star running back Darius Ashley rushed for a title-game record of 271-yards and two touchdowns and the defense pitched a shutout in the 27-0 win. It was only the second shutout in Division I championship history.

The Bombers are currently ranked #5 by USA Today.

Coldwater "Blocks" #8 Cardinal Mooney's Ohio Championship Hopes

With its extra point team coming on the field with :21 to go in the game, #8 Cardinal Mooney (Youngstown, OH) knew it was going to take overtime for the Cardinals to defend their 2006 Division IV Ohio football championship against Coldwater.

Coldwater defensive lineman Kurt Schlarman had other ideas and tossed "cold water" on Mooney hopes. Schlarman became the star of the game when he blocked Ed Reese's kick to give Coldwater its second title in three year with a 28-27 victory.

Big Walnut Comes Up Big With Small Amount of Offense in Ohio Division III Title Game

Big Walnut only totaled 109 yards in total offense in Friday Division III Ohio high school football championship game against Licking Valley...but it was enough to give the Panthers the school's first football championship.

The 14-1 Panthers beat Licking Valley 17-14 thanks to a fourth quarter fumble recovery by Joe Reed that he was able to return 60-yards for a touchdown an a seven point lead with 9:54 to go in the game.

Maria Stein Marion Local Wins Second Straight Ohio Division V Title

Maria Stein Marion Local completed a perfect 15-0 season on Friday beating Ursuline 20-14 for the Flyers second straight Ohio Division V high school football championship.

This one came down to the fourth quarter at Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. Ursuline (12-3) tied the game at 14-14 in the fourth when Justin Brown caused a fumble and then rumbled 50-yards for the tying touchdown.

The game remained tied until Marion Local senior Luke Bertke picked-off a screen pass an returned it 18-yards for the winning score.

#5 St. Xavier Tries to Close-Out Great Season With Division 1 Ohio Title

St. Xavier (Cincinnati) hopes to finish off one of the best undefeated seasons in the country Saturday when it plays Mentor for the Division I high school football championship.

So far St. X has run the table against one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Bombers have beaten several top-notch programs such DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD), Trinity (#1 6A team in KY at game time) and backyard rivals Colerain and Elder.

The Bombers have been ranked as high as #2 by USA Today, and enter the game #5 in the latest USA Today Super 25.

Both teams have chips on their shoulders. St. Xavier wasn't able to make it back to the 2006 title game to defend its 2005 championship, while Mentor is back trying to erase the memory of last year's 36-35 double overtime loss to Colerain in the title tilt.

Two players to watch in this one...Mentor quarterback Bart Tanksi, who was recently named Ohio's Mr. Football and St. X running back Darius Ashley, who despite missing several games has rushed for over 1,300 yards.

#8 Cardinal Mooney Tries To Go Back-to Back in Ohio

It's been quite a year for Cardinal Mooney. The Cardinals have enjoyed high national rankings thanks to solid wins against top-notch competition, plus a several players giving verbal commitments to top-notch programs like Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Penn State.

Saturday, Mooney will go after its second straight Ohio Division IV high school football championship and in the process extend its win streak to 30-games. The Cardinals will take-on Coldwater, the last team to beat C-M. That was in the 2005 state title game 33-9.

Mooney has won its last two games without the services of Notre Dame-bound quarterback Dan McCarthy, who's sat out because of a neck injury. No word on whether McCarthy will play on Saturday.

The Cardinals have already beaten Division I finalist Mentor and Division V finalist Youngstown Ursuline, gave Steubenville its first loss in three years, plus beat, at the time, nationally-ranked Gateway in the Ohio vs. USA Challenge.

For anyone thinking that Cincinnati's St. Xavier isn't the best team in the nation, just take a look at the list of 2007 victims...nationally-ranked DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD), Louisville Trinity (Kentucky's #1 6A team at game time) plus all of Ohio's best in Cleveland Glenville, Elder and Cleveland St. Ignatius.

Now add one more...Colerain, which entered Friday's regional final ranked #9 in the latest USA Today Super 25.

St. X beat Colerain 29-14 before over 20,000 at the University of Cincinati. The win came 364-days after Colerain knocked the Bombers out of the 2006 state tournament 24-7.

#9 Colerain Advances...Next Up #5 St. Xavier

All season long Ohio has been the darling of the USA Today Super 25 high school football poll. Entering this weekend and the 2nd round of the OHSAA high school football playoffs, the Buckeye State had three teams in the Top 10...#5 St. Xavier (Cincinnati), #8 Cardinal Mooney (Youngstown) and #9 Colerain (Cincinnati).

That won't change when Tuesday's poll is release, but it will the following week because Colerain and St. Xavier will collide in the state quarterfinals next week in a rematch of last year's regional final won by Colerain 24-7.

Both teams won Saturday...Colerain with a 27-7 win over Archbishop Moeller; St. Xavier shutout Centerville 31-0 in the Division I playoffs.

Colerain moved to 12-0 behind Joe Harrison, who rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

#5 St. Xavier Looks To Close Out Perfect Regular Season

Two quarterbacks at opposite ends of high school careers will probably play a big role in the outcome of tonight's Cincinnati high school football showdown between St. Xavier (9-0)and Moeller (6-2).

St. X, ranked #5 in the USA Today Super 25, will be led by sophomore quarterback Luke Massa, who started his first varsity game last week and led the Bombers to a 17-14 triple overtime win over St. Ignatius. Moeller will try to ride the right arm of senior Ross Oltorik, who last week threw for a career high 384-yards against St. Edward and became the school's all-time leading passer.

Both teams have already clinched Division I playoff berths, but the Greater Catholic League South title is on-the-line. St. Xavier will clinch the championship outright with a win, but a win by Moeller would mean the two would have to share the title.

#2 St. Xavier Survives in Triple Overtime

Another test for St. Xavier (Cincinnati, OH)...another passing grade.

The Bombers, ranked #2 in the latest USA Today Super 25, needed three overtimes before taking down another Ohio power St. Ignatius 17-14. Senior Dan Milligan ended the defensive struggle with a 33-yard field goal in the third overtime.

St. Xavier (9-0) was playing its first full game without senior quarterback John Hurley, who is out for the season after suffering a torn knee ligament in last week's win over St. Edward. Sophomore Luke Massa put in a solid performance by completing 7 of 14 passes for 87 yards and one touchdown.

St. Ignatius (7-2) played well on defense limiting St. X to 217 yards in total offense, including 135 yards on the ground by Bomber star tailback Darius Ashley on 32 carries.

#9 Cardinal Mooney (OH) Overcomes 17-0 Deficit To Avoid Upset

It took Cardinal Mooney (Youngstown, OH) offense three quarters to wake-up in Friday night's come-from-behind 21-17 win over Akron St. Vincent-St.Mary....yes Lebron's school can also play some football.

Mooney entered the game as Ohio's #1 Division IV team, while SV-SM was #4. Of course, USA Today says the Mooney (8-0) is the ninth best team in the land.

St. Vincent-St. Mary took advantage of a sold-out home crowd to take a 17-0 lead into the fourth quarter behind a 61-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Roger Wilson, a 43-yard field goal by Igor Ilibasic and a one-yard touchdown run by Carnell Evans.

However, Notre Dame recruit, senior quarterback Dan McCarthy came to life in the fourth. McCarthy's one-yard run cut the lead to 17-7. Then two minutes later, McCarthy hooked-up with Tim Marlowe on a 62-yard pass to get CM to within three. The winning score came with 2:43 left when McCarthy tossed a 23-yard scoring pass to Mike Gemma.

However, that wasn't the final nail in the coffin, as Cardinal Mooney's defense had to stop Wilson on a fourth-and-goal at the Cardinals' one-yard line with 45 seconds left.

#2 St. Xavier Squares Off With Backyard Rival

It's the battle of Cincinnati tonight as #2 St. Xavier squares-off with Elder. Up until a couple of weeks ago, this match-up looked like it would have national implications.

That was three weeks ago when Elder snapped Independence's (Charlotte, NC) 109-game win streak at the Ohio Vs. USA Challenge. However, after two straight losses to La Salle (28-19) and St. Edward (10-7), St. X comes in as a heavy favorite in the match-up that began back in 1923.

Sincere 2002, these two have combined for three Division I state titles (Elder '02, & '03, St. Xavier '05).

#4 St. Xavier (OH) Tops #1 Team In Kentucky

If there's one way to name a top team in the country, you MAY be able to do it based on schedule. If that's the case, St. Xavier (Cincinnati) has a great argument for being Numero Uno!!

Last night, the Bombers (4-0) erased an 11 point third quarter deficit on it's way to defeating Trinity High, the #1 6A team in Kentucky, 47-31. St. X has now beaten the top team in Kentucky, one of the top teams in Ohio in Glenville and finally DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD), which was ranked #5 in the nation by USA Today in its pre-season poll.

Quite a three week run!!

To read about the comeback, please click on our headline "#4 St. Xavier Tops #1 Team In Kentucky".

#4 St. Xavier (OH) Downs #5 DeMatha (MD)

St. Xavier of Cincinnati scored 21 unanswered points on its way to a 28-7 win over DeMatha from Hyattsville, Maryland in Sunday's showdown between national powers in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio Vs. USA Challenge III. The loss snapped DeMatha's 22-game win streak.

St. X, which entered the game ranked #4 by USA Today, was playing without its star running back Darius Ashley, who sprained his ankle in the team's season opener. In Ashley's absence quarterback John Hurley threw three TD passes, while Patrick Berning rushed for 99-yards and one touchdown.

The St. Xavier defense was awesome allowing just 132 yards in total offense. Meanwhile the DeMatha "D" was really tested. In fact, the 28 points allowed was the more than it allowed in the Stags first seven games combined in 2006.

#9 Poly (CA) D's It Up Against Glenville (OH)

It's wasn't the offensive shootout that everyone expected when #9 Poly from Long Beach, California took-on Glenville in the Ohio Vs. USA Challenge III on Saturday in Canton. Instead it was a battle of two very good defenses, with Poly taking the honors 21-13.

Glenville actually had the upper hand in offensive yardage with 225 yards in total offensive to the Jackrabbits 200. Poly, which was playing it's first game of the season, is ranked #9 by USA Today. Glenville falls to 1-1 on the season.

Elder Snaps Independence's (NC) 109-Game Win Streak

De La Salle High School (Concord, CA) fans relax...your school's and nation's best 151-game win streak is safe thanks to Cincinnati's Elder High, which took down Independence 41-34 in overtime to snap the Charlotte school's 109-game win streak in the Third Annual Kirk Herbstreit Ohio Vs. USA Challenge.

The Panther did it by scoring first in overtime, and then defensive back Keith Hamburg picked-off a pass on a third down and 19 to end the game and the streak.

#23 Colerain (OH) Needs Overtime To Beat Hoover (AL)

Senior field goal kicker Mark Tabar was the hero for Colerain on Saturday as he kicked his Cardinals to an exciting 20-17 overtime win over Hoover (AL) in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio Vs. USA Challenge III. Colerain, which entered the game ranked #23 in the nation by USA Today, also needed a defensive stop in overtime to preserve the victory.

In addition to Tabar's heroics, Colerain used a strong ground attack led by senior running back Dominique Sherrer who carried the ball 31 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

Independence NC) Takes Its 109 Game Win Streak On The Road To Face Elder

Preview #4 St. Xavier (OH) vs. #5 DeMatha (MD)

Ohio versus USA Challenge III has eleven big games, but maybe none bigger than Sunday's showdown in Cincinnati where St. Xavier, ranked #4 by the USA Today, takes on DeMatha of Hyattsville, Maryland, ranked #5 by USA Today.

It will be a national stage for DeMatha head coach Bill McGregor, who since taking over the reigns of the program in 1982 is 239-32-3!!

Kirk Herbstreit Ohio Vs. USA Challenge III

Year three of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio versus USA Challenge should be the best ever with 11 games in two days in two cities, featuring the best Ohio has to offer against national powerhouses.

“Every year the teams get better, the matchups more attractive and the national rivalries more intense,” said
ESPN College Football Analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “There are numerous Division I players in this year’s event who are being recruited by and have verbally committed to such top schools as Ohio State, Michigan, UCLA, USC, Florida, and Notre Dame. It’s
these players, their teammates, the coaches, fans, competition, sense of community and pageantry that make high
school football a passion for me and make me proud to have my name on this event.”

#4 St. Xavier Rolls In Opener...But Star Tailback Hurt!

St. Xavier cruised to an easy 35-7 win over Winton Woods Saturday, but Bombers fans are holding their breath today.

That's because St. X's star tailback Darius Ashley twisted his ankle in the game after just two carries for 9 yards. Ashley was then held out the rest of the game.

St. Xavier, which is ranked #4 in the nation by USA Today and #1 by PrepNation.com, now begins it's preparation for next Sunday's showdown with national ranked DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD) with a big question mark....will Ashley be ready?

After the game Ashley was quoted as saying "I'd play iwth a broken leg in the state finals"...however next week isn' t the state finals!
