Maty Mauk's High School Career Ends in Loss in State Title Game

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

When I talked with Kenton head coach Mike Mauk and his son Maty in July, all the two could talk about was winning a state championship, not the passing records Maty was on-the-brink of breaking.

Maty got all the record, but not the state title.

Norwayne scored a touchdown with 31 seconds to go in the game to capture Ohio's Division IV championship with a heart-stopping 48-42 win.

Mauk tried to bring his team back with only a half minute to go, but he threw an interception at the goal-line on the last play of his high school career.

The recently-named 2011 Ohio Mr. Football finished his career completing 27-of-50 passes for 421 yards and five touchdowns.  The Missouri-bound Mauk also carried the ball 22 times for 50 yards and a touchdown.

The teams combined for six touchdowns in the fourth quarter and 966 yards in total offense.

Kenton's Maty Mauk Named 2011 Ohio Mr. Football

by Jeff Fisher

The 25th annual Associated Press Ohio Mr. Football award was a no brainer, at least in my mind.

America's most prolific passer, Maty Mauk of Kenton High School was the unanimous winner of the award that was handed-out on Thursday.

Mauk is the country's top passer in passing yards in a career (18,006), pass attempts (1,287) and touchdowns (209).

On Saturday, Mauk and his father, Kenton head coach Mike Mauk, will go after the school's first-ever state championship in the Division IV title game.

Others under consideration were: Johnstown-Monroe running back Ross Franklin, Cincinnati Taft defensive lineman Adolphus Washington, Steubenville all-around star Najee Murray, Wadsworth running back Jack Snowball, Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky, Willoughby South running back Kareem Hunt and Cincinnati Moeller running back Monty Madaris.
