Service Day 2013

Brian Wical is in his first year as the head football coach at Cardinal Stritch High School outside of Toledo, Ohio in the town of Oregon. At 25-years old, Coach Wical is one of the youngest head football coaches in America.  Throughout the 2013 season, Coach Wical will give readers an inside perspective of what it's like to build a tradition at a school that has had only ten victories since 2007.

One thing that I am always preaching about in our program is creating a 1st class culture. I know it sounds cliché, but we want to help provide a program that develops young men that behave in a 1st class manner. We want them to behave that way on the football field, in the classroom, and in our community.

One thing a lot of kids don’t realize is their actions outside of the school building reflect not only on themselves, but on the football program and the high school. Therefore, if a kid is out in our community and causes trouble and has a run-in with law enforcement, not only will that look bad on the player himself, but also it will make people think that we don’t hold our kids accountable in our program.

A fine example of this right now on a much larger scale is the whole Aaron Hernandez fiasco. Many people are questioning the New England Patriots, Florida Gators, and Urban Meyer’s handling of Hernandez while under their watch. This is exactly what I mean. It is automatically assumed that if you do bad, someone isn’t keeping a close enough eye on you. As a result, I try to teach our young men that it is imperative that they behave in a civil manner that displays class and character everywhere that they go.

One thing that I think is essential in helping to provide our kids with an opportunity to show what great young men they are is scheduling a team service project. We can put action to our words, and it also shows our players that we as coaches don’t just give them lip service about these things, because we actually get out and participate with them.

We had two different projects set up for our team this year, so we divided in half. One of the projects was landscaping work at the Little Sisters of the Poor home. This facility services the elderly who also are poverty stricken. Through conversation, I learned that there are actually nine nuns who live in the facility and help run and manage it, as well as two Catholic priests. Our kids did seven hours worth of odd jobs on their HUGE property, which included rearranging their maintenance garage, spreading mulch, assisting in cutting down seven trees, and edging their flower beds.

The second group assisted a local parish, St. Jerome, in setting up their annual festival. They were a huge help to those responsible for managing the festival and assured everything would be set up.

Both parties were extremely thankful for our help. There is nothing greater than seeing the bond that teammates make while doing these types of projects coupled with the pure excitement of the people we helped when they see all that we were able to accomplish for them in such a short amount of time. This was definitely a well spent seven hours and we will continue to do in future years as we build the football program at Cardinal Stritch High School.

The Importance of Mental Toughness

by Brian Wical
Cardinal Stritch High School Head Football Coach
Follow @CoachWical

Cardinal Stritch High School FootballIn my opinion, mental toughness is the greatest thing that you can potentially gain from the weight room and off-season program. Notice I said “potentially gain”. There is no guarantee that you will actually gain mental toughness just by your kids showing up. You must “teach” it to them. There are various ways of doing this, none greater than endurance challenges.

As the coach, you can control the difficulty of the drills and exercises being performed on a daily basis. Since that is the case, at Cardinal Stritch we work to make the workouts tough enough that our kids will not be able to complete the entire workout or set without taking a small break.

An example of this is Coach Baden (Strength & Conditioning) will tell our guys to do a set of Mountain Climbers. We may not give them a set number, but rather, we time them and don’t let them know how long we will be timing them for. We know it is tough even for the most in-shape athletes to complete this task without take a few seconds to pause when it is combined with all of the other exercises in the workout. The thought behind this is: lets say you wish for your players to be able to do 45 seconds of Mountain Climbers. If we time them for a minute and they take 2 or 3, 3-second breaks throughout, they are actually doing 51-54 seconds worth of them, which is more than what we had planned. Also, by demanding more than what they can do, you are forcing them to fight through the exercise whenever they are thinking of quitting.

By using this philosophy, it has improved our teams overall mental toughness exponentially thus far. Between raising our expectations of competition and trying to “teach” mental toughness as best as we can, we have actually improved at a rate (in those two categories) much faster than what I had originally planned for this football team. That means we will need to spend a lot less time on these things once our summer camp days begin and can focus on football more.

Some may think that getting bigger, faster, and stronger is the most important thing that can be gained from the weight room. Although I feel this is very important to our overall success, I feel like it is naturally going to happen. What I mean is, I have hired a first-class strength coach to take care of the physical aspects of the summer plan. If our kids show up, I am more than confident they will get stronger. That is a byproduct of showing up.

When you think about it, the alternative would be laying in bed at home. When you compare the two, showing up to the weight room for a workout is obviously going to get you stronger, bigger, and faster than being at home. Therefore, I focus on the mental aspect the entire time, personally. I try to drive and motivate our kids to push through it and to begin to tap into their full potential. Are we completely there yet? No. But the good news is that we are making decent strides every single day towards our ultimate goal: become a championship winning football program.

Ohio Wins Fourth Straight in Big 33 Football Classic

by Jeff Fisher

The Pennsylvania stars blew a 14-point fourth quarter lead Saturday night and then lost 24-21 to Ohio in overtime in the annual Big 33 Football Classic in Hershey.

Ohio pushed its win streak to four straight over the Keystone Staters with four interceptions in the fourth quarter and overtime.

The Buckeye State claimed the victory when Nana Kyeremeth (Thomas Worthington HS) intercepted a Skyler Mornhiweg (St. Joseph's Prep) pass in the first overtime.

Ohio Playoff Pairings Released

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

Today, the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced the 192 team field for the 2011 state playoffs in six divisions.

Four of last year's champs are back to defend their titles; only Waterson (Division III) and Youngstown Ursuline (Division V) didn't make it back in 2011.

Newark Catholic didn't make the field, which means it won't be able to improve upon its 62 playoff wins, which is the most in Ohio high school football history.  St. Ignatius is next with 55 postseason victories, followed by Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (51), Columbus St. Francis DeSales (47), Steubenville (45) and Versailes (45).

St. Ed's Rick Finotti Talks about #1 Don Bosco Prep Tonight's High School Football America

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

St. Edward head coach Rick Finotti will join me tonight on the High School Football America radio show to discuss his team's big game on Saturday against #1 Don Bosco Prep from New Jersey.

The game will actually played in New York City at Vince Lombardi's alma mater, Fordham University in the Bronx.  The game originally was going to be played at Army's Michie Stadium at West Point, but was moved to the Bronx shortly after the announcement was made.

Finotti has done an incredible job since taking over the program in March, 2009.  Last year, St. Ed went undefeated, winning Ohio's Division 1 title.  The Eagles are currently riding a 21-game win streak, while DBP brings a 39-game win streak into the game.

St. Ed's is playing one of the toughest schedules in the country, having beaten two out-of-state opponents already...Penn Hills (Pittsburgh, PA) 47-6 and Jefferson (Tampa, FL) 34-17, plus last year's Ohio Division 5 champ Ursuline 20-7.  It also doesn't get any easier at Saturday's game, because the Eagles still have to face in-state and national powers Archbishop Moeller and St. Xavier.  Also, not to be overlooked is the team's regular season finale against St. Ignatius.

St. Edward is strong upfront, led by offensive tackle Kyle Kalis, who's given his verbal to Michigan.

Don Bosco Prep won the country's "mythical" national championship back in 2009.  The Ironmen are led by Greg Toal, who owns a 136-10 record since taking over 12 years ago.  The Ramsey, New Jersey school has won five straight New Jersey Non-Public Group 4 state titles.

DBP also owns two victories over out-of-state opponents this year, beating Mission Viejo (CA) 35-7 and Manatee (FL) 22-16.

Back in July, Coach Toal also joined me as a guest on High School Football America.  You can listen to that show by clicking here or you can check it out on YouTube below.

Also on tonight's show that begins at 7 PM Eastern Time: Dylan Sheffield, quarterback at Wichita Falls High School in Texas and Trey Hall at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas.

Sheffield broke the Texas single-game passing record last week when he threw for 683 yards.  Hall will talk about his record-setting QB Zach Howell, who broke Kansas' single-game yards mark in early September and almost set a new one last week.

King James Returns to High School Gridiron

While Cleveland Cavalier fans may still be upset with LeBron James for leaving his hometown state, members James' alma mater football team are happy that the NBA All-Star still has a soft spot in his heart for his old team.

James, who was a pretty good wide receiver when he played at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, returned to the high school gridiron on Tuesday to work-out with the team that's undefeated and ranked #3 this week in the latest Division III Associated Press state rankings.

According to James, on his Twitter account, he practiced in full pads.

James, who caught 27 touchdown passes during his career, was an all-state player during his sophomore year; led the school to the state semifinals in his junior year, but didn't play as a senior, so as not to suffer an injury that would have cost him millions from the NBA.

Many believe that James would have had a great NFL career had he chosen football.

After the workout Tuesday, James tweeted on Twitter..."Just got done practicing with the St.V Varsity football team, full pads and all. Felt great being back on the field. Should I?"

Below is video of James making a couple of catches during his football career.

As an added bonus...I found this video of another NBA all-star Allen Iverson on the high school gridiron.  In 1992, Iverson led Bethel High School to the Virginia Division 5 state championship as a quarterback and defensive back.

Colerain Snaps Cocoa's 38-Game Win Streak

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

In Cincinnati, one big streak continued while another streak was snapped when Colerain (Ohio) beat Cocoa (Florida) 17-7 before a national television audience on ESPN.

The victory helped the Cardinals extended their home win streak to 60 straight and snapped the three-time Florida 2A champs win streak at 38 straight.

Kenton High School's Maty Mauk on High School Football America Radio Show

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

Maty Mauk of Kenton High School enters his senior season poised to set several new national, career passing records.

Thursday night, he'll join me on the High School Football Football America radio show to discuss his incredible career throwing the ball.  In just 35 games, Mauk has thrown for 13,519 yards and 151 touchdowns.

Those are some incredible numbers that are magnified by the fact that the person he is chasing for the top spot is his brother Ben, who set those marks from 1999 to 2002.

Heading into the 2011 season, Ben and Maty have thrown for an incredible 30,883 yards for Kenton.  The Wildcats pass-happy offense is the creation of the boys' father Mike Mauk, who took over the program in the 80s.

The offense employs, five linemen, five receivers and Maty as the trigger-man of the offense.

Maty needs 3,846 yards to overtake Ben's record of 17,364 passing yards and 4,156 total yards to pass Ben's mark of 19,628 yards.  Maty needs 28 touchdowns to break the national record.

Here are some great family passing notes posted on MaxPreps.com:

Career Passing Yards
Ben and Maty Mauk: 30,883
Josh and John David Booty: 20,174
Ty and Koy Detmer: 16,226
Peyton and Eli Manning: 14,596

Career TD Passes
Ben and Maty Mauk: 329
Peyton and Eli Manning: 181

South Wins Ohio North-South Classic

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

I don't know whether to call it the end of 2010 or the start of 2011, but high school football was in the air Friday in Columbus.

It was the 66th annual Ohio North-South Classic all-star football game...and in the end for the seniors ending their high school football careers, it was the South players that walked off the field with a victory.

The South beat the North stars 25-7 for its second straight win in the series.  The North still leads the all-time series 38-25 with three ties.

Akron-bound Tyler Williams of Colerain High School scored two touchdowns to win the South MVP award.  Westerville South running back Jayshon Jackson, who was the North's MVP, was the game's leading rusher with 115 yards on 13 carriers.

Ohio Says No to Spring High School Football Practice

by Jeff Fisher
Ohio High School Football Huddle

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has voted unanimously against allowing spring football practice in the Buckeye State.

The proposal sought to add a two-week spring football practice timetable during the last two weeks of May.  It would have given teams 10 hours of field time that was broken down into two weeks of one hour practices or one week of two hour practice sessions.

There is a chance that the OHSAA may reconsider the idea at a later date.

Ohio, along with California, Florida, Georgia and Texas, is one of the top five states producing Division I talent, however, Ohio is the only state without spring practices.
